Sample Databases for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (December 2009) Samples Refresh 4

This release is dedicated to the sample databases that ship for Microsoft SQL Server 2008. See Database Prerequisites for steps to take before installing the databases. See Installing Databases for step by step installation instructions. This release contains a simpler, more reliable installer which should make installation easier and more robust.

Note: SQL Server 2008R2 samples databases are located here

If you are having difficulties with the current installer, please see Database Installer Help.

Note: Looking for SQL Server 2005 sample databases? Click on SQL Server 2005 in the Releases area on the upper right hand part of this page. The databases installer in this release will only work on SQL Server 2008 instances and will not work correctly for SQL Server 2005 instances.

All of the AdventureWorks databases for SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 are included in the installer.

Please give us your feedback in the samples forum! (Yes, even the complaints. We do try to respond to them.)

Reviews for this release

I do not have Full Text Indexing enabled on the installation. I do not have access to the installer disk to install that attribute. All I wanted was the mdf files for AdventureWorks and AdventureWorksDW. Why is that so impossible.

Installed SR4 without problems. My problem is when I deploy either of the .RDL's I get an error: Error 1 The path of the item '/' is not valid. The full path must be less than 260 characters long; other restrictions apply. If the report server is in native mode, the path must start with slash. 0 0

mmaglala is correct. The installation worked out well, as long as you have the prereq's done first. ... Where are the sample scripts for R4?

Download and installation works. Don't listen to the rookies below. Although, it's much easier to enable Filestream via config mgr because the 2 SQL statements provided acts flaky. After installation, it created the 3 AW dbs automagically then I redeployed the sample AS biz intel solution to get the cubes going...Sincerely, Maurice Maglalang

This sucks! I get all the databases except for AdventureWorks2008. I went through all the recommended steps, took everything off and checked to see that all my systems work. I even went through the review and tried to link to a defunct site. Would appreciate a zip file of AdventureWorks2008 I could simply attach. Unnecessary complication and convolution in this whole process.

SQL Server is very good.

I tried to install the sample database, but got the message "fetal error... object reference not set to an instance of object."

Dear All, AdventureWorks2008_SR4.exe contains malware. My AVG antivirus detected it , in a midway of installing the database. Beware !!!!.

This is another bad QAed release from Microsoft
by binh_tham on Aug 8, 2011 at 5:49 AM
The zip file had the sample. Simply unzipped it and attached it without any problems.
by ramakant2k on Jul 28, 2011 at 5:20 AM
Installer didn't work as others have stated, all prereqs in place. Did unziped the .exe using 7zip and found, modified and ran the instawdwdb.sql for the Sample DB I was interested in.

The instructions were clear. I managed to install the sample databases on a Windows 7 Enterprise laptop without any issues. As easy as eating chicken!

For some reason, on the installation page where I pick which databases to install, the install button is disabled no matter what I do. Is there a way around it? I only need to AdventureWorks OLTP database installed.
by gabbyrozow on Feb 10, 2011 at 11:32 AM
The installer kept failing for me on "Error at object 'DatabaseSelection' in markup file 'DatabaseInstaller;component/databaseselection.xaml' Line 78 Position 3". I had all the prerequisites and was using the same account that I had used to install SQL. I ran a Repair in SQL Setup and it finally worked.

Worked fine for me also; made sure all the pre-req's were met 1st...

Installer worked great for me. I have Windows Server 2008R2 and SQL Server 2008 installed. Make sure you installed the right version of Adventureworks database. For those who has SQL Server 2008 use AdventureWorks2008_SR4.exe and for SQL Server 2008 R2 use AdventureWorks2008R2_SR1.exe

I've worked/researched this off and on for over a year. Never did get Adventureworks2008, only Adventureworks and the others. I've tried everything!!! This SUCKS!!! I'm using Win XP, sp3.

For all those desperate users, follow this thread to get AW2008 installed properly. Sorry, but it's all about RTFM. Cheers, http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlserversamples/thread/44b76e89-1ac6-4f1b-b88b-80d3927db345

This release installs AdventureWorks NOT AdventureWorks2008. Other databases installed are AdventureWorksDW , AdventureWorksDW2008, AdventureWorksLT and AdventureWorksLT2008. SQL 2008 online books db tutorials uses AdventureWorks2008. -- MY BAD. People, you have to enable full-text and filestream in order for AdventureWorks2008 db to be installed.
by acapacio on Nov 16, 2010 at 11:47 PM
I had tried to re-install the sample databases & AdventureWorks2008 was missing. All other databases were created. After much research, I was able to deduce that the Folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\Documents was created by the install. After deleting the Documents folder & all sample dbs and reinstalling SR4, it worked.

Install runs but ignores the SQL Instance default database location. The install asked where to extract the scripts (SQL) and datafiles (csv) but it put the physical mdf and ldf files in the wrong place (not the default location set on the properties tab).

Having a major problem getting the Adventureworks2008 database to install. All the others run perfectly but this one refuses to load. I have followed all the previous instructions from other peoples posts and still no joy. Could someone point me in the right direction or possibly link a download for just that database? Many thanks

Works just fine with Windows 7 (32)
by dasdeges on May 3, 2010 at 5:18 PM
My installation failed if i download the exe file and try to run from there. I am able to install when i run the exe file directly from the browse. i think it has to do with permissions.

AdventureWorks2008_SR4 is not a valid Win32 Application getting this error as i run the setup on windows 2008 r2 with sql 2008 sp1. full text deamon is running and filestream enabled.

Installed without a problem on XP SP3 running SQL 2008 Express. Contains a good quantity of sample data to "practice" on.
by bookgeek on Apr 9, 2010 at 5:42 PM
If you are getting the object not referenced fatal error, ensure that the account you are logged in as has access to the db. fixed the problem for me.

2008R2 - works great right out of the box. Good job! (had to grant explicit rights on the DW-databases to the service account in order to deploy the SSAS solution)
by ErikBo on Mar 21, 2010 at 4:51 PM
I was wondering what happened to your simpler databases (Northwind, pub). The download page documents that they were in the 2005 samples, but the Adventureworks download gives no indication that they are included. Disappeared?
by nbrin on Mar 21, 2010 at 12:02 AM
I don't know why I keep trying to install the AdventureWorks database! All prereqs are met, yet this install continues to have a fatal error. AdventureWorks2008_SR4.exe
by gbologna on Mar 4, 2010 at 8:03 PM
Had a trouble with policies - the installer should check it before start installation or it fail.
