AdventureWorks 2008 SR3 installer ends prematurely - found a fix

Installing AW2008 SR3 on SQL Server 2008 (SP1) - 10.0.2531.0 Enterprise Evaluation, running on Windows Server 2003 (SP2) Standard Edition, using the .msi.
When I run the installer, it gets to the page where I select the instance to install to - I select my only instance, the default instance "MSSQLSERVER (Engine)". The "Next" button is greyed out - if I click back, then click next to return to this dialog, the Next button is now enabled but very soon after clicking it, I see a dialog telling me that the "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 AdventureWorks Databases Refresh 3 Samples (x86) Setup Wizard ended prematurely". I successfully installed the databases using the .sql installer files in SQLCMD mode to workaround this.
Today I installed SSAS, SSRS, and SSIS - didn't have these installed previously. Decided to try the installer again - dropped the existing databases and ran the installer. This time, on the dialog prompting me to select the instance to install to there was a second drop-down which asked me to select my OLAP instance. I did this, the Next button became enabled, and the installer completed successfully, installing the databases.
Could it be that the installer is failing as it is expecting an OLAP instance to install to, even though it doesn't prompt for one when there is no OLAP instance on the server?
Hope this helps with some of the installation issues!

I don't think that's the problem - I have a default SQL instance and a default SSAS instance and I'm still having the problem. However, I installed an SSAS instance integrated with SharePoint first (then a default SSAS standalone instance). I'm wondering if having an integrated instance installed first might be throwing it? Or even if the default SQL installation isn't the first installation?
