Sample Databases for Microsoft SQL Server 2008R2 (SR1)

This release is dedicated to the sample databases that ship for Microsoft SQL Server 2008R2. See Database Prerequisites for SQL Server 2008R2 for feature configurations required for installing the sample databases. See Installing SQL Server 2008R2 Databases for step by step installation instructions.

The SR1 release contains minor bug fixes to the installer used to create the sample databases. There are no changes to the databases themselves. If you have already successfully installed the AdventureWorks 2008R2 sample databases there is no need to install AdventureWorks 2008R2 SR1. This release has been updated to correctly handle the situation where the default instance is the only instance available.

All of the AdventureWorks sample databases for SQL Server 2008R2 are included in the self extracting zip file. When this zip file is run, all content is unzipped to a temporary directory and an installer application is automatically started. This application copies the database scripts and data files to the directory specified, and optionally installs sample databases. If some databases cannot be installed, a brief explanation is displayed and a link is provided for more information about how to resolve the installation issues.

The analysis services databases must be deployed manually using SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio after installation is complete. Please see Installing Analysis Services Database for more details.

The latest installer which is now available has better support for instances with different version of SQL Server, and also includes both the AdventureWorks 2008R2 schemas and data files and the original AdventureWorks schemas and data files which shipped with SQL Server 2005. Installing both AdventureWorks families will ensure that all samples will work correctly and that you'll be able to explore the new features in SQL Server 2008.

Update
Some users have been unable to successfully install the AdventureWorks2008R2 OLTP database using the SR1 installer. We have added a version of the database without FILESTREAM as a single file that you can download and attach. To install this version, go to AdventureWorks2008R2 without filestream.

Please give us your feedback in the samples forum! (Yes, even the complaints. We do try to respond to them.)
 Reviews for this release

1. Win 7+SQL Server 2008-download 'AdventureWorks 2008R2 SR1' default location. 2. Copy and paste in 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA' and extract here. 3. 'Attach' AdventureWorks2008 database through SQL Server 2008 RS 4. Also check FILE STREAM is enabled. It was initially challenging to download AdventureWorks2008 db onto Win 7, perseverance prevailed.

Does not work with the online tutorials. Tables in the online tutorials completely different than the AdventureWorks2008Re sample database. One star for easy down load on 64bit window7 on laptop. Finally got the right databas - AdventureWorks, but now i get error on sp.BusinessEntityID. I added one more star. I'll add one more when I figure out query error,

Excellent. Quick download. Installer worked fine, SSAS samples optional and also easy to install after running main program.

The installer worked for me. I'd rather not have the OLAP rolled into it but other then that it worked fine.

This is not a proper downloadable. The exe(AdventureWorks2008R2_SR1.exe) which is downloading is some scrap. Can you please correct the downloadable? My rating will definitely change for this once we have this working.

The database 'AdventureWorks2008R2' cannot be opened because it is version 661. This server supports version 662 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported. I would think that 661 is included when it says 662 and earlier. Nice.

Try 'Run as Administrator' to run under 64-bit Windows. Otherwise, the setup fails.

Installation provided helpful tips and went as expected. Env: Win7 x64, Default Instance.

The documentation of the samples doesn't match the table names and design provided in the databases. i.e. AdventureWorks2008R2 database doesn't exist, however AdventureWorks exists, and so on... It is quite painfull to use this release to follow the tutorials.
by vhinzu on Aug 29 2011 at 4:15 PM

It installed just fine but doesn't have the tables for the SSRS tutorials for SQL2008R2. Microsoft desperately needs to remove the cheap labor from its documentation department. It's just not working out. Now going over to the forums to try and figure out what to use.

Installed mine on SQL 2008 Standard no problemo.......
by msimango on Aug 24 2011 at 11:34 AM

The same problem like been mentioned by someone on 2nd Aug - for 64 bit platform setup button is disabled. I have managed myself to install it. 1 I extract the archve and found that executable inside the archve doesn't want to run on 64 bit platform. 2 I went to the folder with reqired database and fount *.sql file 3 I have modified the parameters :setvar 4 run script in SQLCMD mode

I had no problems at all. Installed in 4+ minutes. I must point out, though, that when I installed SQL Server 2008 R2, I selected Full Text Search and FILESTREAM, and added another instance (to keep the play and the work separate). So when I attempted the samples installation everything was ready to go. I suggest to those with problems to check the server installation or re-install.

Install not success. A fatal error occurred during installation. Details: Failed object initialization (ISupportlnitializeEndlnit). An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service. Error at object DatabaseSelection’ in markup file Databaselnstaller;component/ databaseselection.xaml Line 78 Position 3.
by saknarak on May 31 2011 at 4:55 AM

Mine installed without a problem on my Vista System. If you have a problem installing, then resolve it, since that is going to be your job anyway, if your are a MCDBA. Do not be deceived, Oracle has the same kind of issues too. TC

Wow. Who knew.... the download file must be put in the 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50."named instance(i.e. SQLEXPRESS)" folder before you try to install it. Otherwise, you get the dreaded "Failed object initialization (ISupportInitialize.EndInit). An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. Error at object ‘DatabaseSelection’ in markupfile" message

There appears to be no installer for SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition/x86. The FILESTREAM option under the R4 release is mandatory, but not supported for 2K8 Dev/x86 when running under WOW (as I am). The AdvWorks "no FILESTREAM" version indicates it must run against a later version of the database than the one I have. Is it really this complicated to install the demo database?

As a newbe to MS SQL server I appreciate the sample databases and scripts. I’m presently having issues connecting with Crystal Reports & SAP. Can anyone provide a reference to get me going fast?

Didn't work for my default instance. Many thanks to HilaryCotter for the suggestion provided in her rating above. That got me access to the tables and I could proceed from there. This 30 min project took 3 hours. This release needs work.

Worked a treat, as a newbie I am very relieved. Well done.

I have SQL Server 2008, R2 on Windows Server 2008, standard, R2. I used individual domain accounts to run the services. Before installing the sample databases I made sure (checked and double check) that the individual domain accounts had the correct access. The last step was to install the sample AdventureWorks. The instructions for the sample db were perfect, worked perfectly the first time.
by VSCoder60 on Feb 5 2011 at 6:45 PM

installed a treat. lost a star because it required me to make the "tools" folder first.

Installed without a hitch, and the steps to configure my database for this install were clear and concise, thanks!

ARE YOU SERIOUS - - first, several errors installing 2008r2 (MOF error, WMI bull, instances switching, NOW there are glitches trying to get even the simple examples loaded for a presentation on why we need to move from Oracle - - TWO solid wasted days trying to get a fresh machine off of the ground - - get it together guys, you have plenty of time and bucks on your hands - - shameful PERIOD...

There was an error in the install package when there was only a single instance of SQL Server. This has been fixed. Folks that received the error message "No valid sql server instances are accessible for installation" should try the install again. Gail Erickson [MSFT] SQL Server Documentation Team

No problems at all,.... Just unzipped and installed them without any problems. Do you guys have the right SQL server edition?

These samples install and work like charm and I'm sure no one would have any issues if first have READ and DONE the "Database Prerequisites for SQL Server 2008R2" http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Database%20Prerequisites%20for%20SQL%20Server%202008R2 Just one service needs to be set to Automatic, and then start it. And FILESTREAM to be enabled as described. Wish u success!

This doesn't work. When is someone at Microsoft going to notice? None of the earlier suggestions work for me.
by rjback on Dec 2 2010 at 3:06 PM

Doesn't work. To get it to work after you get the error go to a command prompt and change directories to cd %temp% then do this dir /od You should find a directory which looks something like this: WZSE0.TMP go inside that directory and type explorer . Then you will see all the folders. Copy these folders to a known location on your hard drive (I use C:\temp). Open up SSMS run instawdb.sql

Honestly, this defective install is a stupid waste of time. It does not work on a default installation. I ended up having to compile the examples manually from the script files because I don't know how to create a new instance (nor do I want one). I presume that this is intended for beginners??? Why wasn't it actually tested in a default environment???
by GlenT on Nov 30 2010 at 11:01 PM

Yep. it needed one more instance to work. Was trying to figure out for couple weeks now. Glad that smart people figured out what is the work around. Once pass that install issue, things seems to be in order. Can not give better rating if the taking off is so tough.
by another_coder on Nov 30 2010 at 5:22 PM

For the others who are trying to install this: It does not seem to work on an install to the default instance. You need to create a new instance (e.g. MYSQLSERVER) then run the sample data on the new instance and it'll work fine. That's what i did and it is working. Give it a try. G'luck.
by cr8zymike on Nov 30 2010 at 1:54 PM

Same problem: "No valid SQL Server instances are accessible for installation". Fresh installation of Win7, SQL Server 2008, all prerequisites met. Ended up installing 2008 SR4. Please fix!
by leahcimp on Nov 28 2010 at 12:07 PM

I had the same "no valid SQL Server instances are accessible" error. I installed a 2nd DB instance (was going to anyway) and when I re-ran setup being able to toggle between the instances did the trick. Switched to my 2nd instance, then back to default (where I want the sample DB) and it gave me the option to select components to install. Windows 7 x64 install.
by iwkid on Nov 24 2010 at 3:06 PM

same install problem No valid SQL Server instances are accessible for installation. If instances are available the problem could be due to SMO issues. This is a default installation on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise server, everything is 64bit. SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise 64bit, complete install. Please fix.

Message from Install:"No valid SQL Server instances are accessible for installation. If instances are available the problem could be due to SMO issues." The install in the tools directory was run - same message(sam program) but the install program dropdown shows the 3 SQL instances running on the laptop and the SQL2008R2 is the one it shows - how can it say no instances when it runs. (XP SP3)

Same error on Win7 64bit SQL 2008R2 fresh install
by Joshka on Nov 22 2010 at 3:04 AM

same issue - I got around this issue by creating an Instance on : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server. Installer does appear to find Instances in this "default" location.

Same issue... no instance found... Thank you for fixing

Attempted to install multiple times: Fresh setup of Windows 2008R2 and then SQL 2008R2. I am getting message that no instance found - tried 4 times. Setup copies files to directory, but because instance not found - no DBs are created. Then installed 2008 SR4 samples - worked no problem for first attempt. Please fix this setup.
