How to install the AdventureWorks2012 OLTP database

This release is dedicated to the Adventure Works sample databases and related samples that ship for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 RTM. This release uses the AdventureWorks2012 and AdventureWorksDW2012 sample databases. They have been upgraded to the SQL Server 2012 RTM version.

These databases cannot be installed on any version of SQL Server other than SQL Server 2012 RTM.

The AdventureWorks2012 OLTP database has two versions:
  • AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf for case-insensitive collation
  • AdventureWorks2012CSData.mdf for case-sensitive collation

You can also download a DDL script and .csv files to install the database from script. Download AdventureWorks 2012 OLTP to create the case-insensitive database or AdventureWorks 2012 CS OLTP for the case-sensitive database. The dates in the database have remained circa 2008 dates.

Update as of 3/16:

We have added a lightweight version of AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf called AdventureWorksLT2012_Data.mdf. This is a lightweight, case-insensitive version of the database. A lightweight version for the case-sensitive database and accompanying script will be available around 3/23.

For details on how to install the AdventureWorks2012 OLTP database from script, see SQL Server Samples Readme.

The AdventureWorksDW2012 data warehouse sample database in this release includes additional tables, columns, and images that support analysis Services tabular modeling and Power View samples and tutorials. For details on how to install the SQL Server Samples Readme.

To ensure proper working of the samples you must ensure that all databases and tabular models and samples belong to the same release version. For example, mixing the SQL Server 2012 RC0 with SQL Server 2012 RTM may cause issues.

Install the databases by running code or by using the SQL Server Management Studio user interface. For step by step instructions, see SQL Server Samples Readme.

Analysis Services Multidimensional and Tabular Databases and Related Samples

  • AdventureWorks Multidimensional Models SQL Server 2012 inclues:
    • The Adventure WorksDW2012 multidimensional model for Enterprise and Standard Editions.
    • The multidimensional projects for the Analysis Services tutorials.
  • AdventureWorks Tabular Model SQL Server 2012 includes the AdventureWorks DW tabular model.

Update as of 3/19:
Adventure Works Internet Sales Tabular Model has been updated to address a non-breaking setting change.

For infomation about prerequisites and installation, see SQL Server Samples Readme.

Reviews for this release

The downloads works like a charm. For those running windows 7 and 8 all you need to do is start Sqlserver 2012 as an administrator then attach the files.
by kamiru on Feb 18, 2014 at 11:30 AM
Attach the .mdt file, it automatically adds a .ldf file (which will say not found). Delete the .ldf file and then click ok. It works super! Thanks guys!

Chrome blocks the download of Adventureworks OLTP Script. It is labeled as malicious. Firefox downloads it, but labels it as malicious and it saves as a part file.
by HerdingDogRescuer on Dec 21, 2016 at 2:01 AM
It is easy to attach everything worked fine but Tables, views columns in this database doesn't match with any of the query example in Any MS Books. Is there way to get sample database that works with Queries in MS Books?

hello All, Please if you could help I would appreciate it. I loaded the Adventure DB to Azure but when I tried to connect to it through SQL Server studio I do not have access to it. But if I created a db directly in Azure under my account and the azure user then I have access to this db through SQL Server Studio. I read a lot and it look like the problem is credentials but I can not figurate what I need to do. I see the adventure database is created under dbo but I do not what the password and official user are. and also I believe I don't have these user and password in my local pc where SqlServer Studio is installed. Thanks! I am tired of trying different things.

Downloaded Successfully. Its really helpful. Thanks !
by varinder_sandhu on Jan 22, 2014 at 5:06 AM
IMHO, just use the full database backup zip file rather than attaching the mdf. much easier
by dqchronicle on Jan 18, 2014 at 8:35 PM
Trying to install AdventureWorks 2012 OLTP database from script. But as mentioned here: But not able to locate this folder: {SQL Server Path}\Tools\Samples\ There is no folder named Tools inside {SQL Server Path} folder. Do I have to create these folders manually ?
by anujrathi on Dec 12, 2013 at 6:51 AM
I tried to insert the AdventureWorksDW2012 by removing the .ldf file.. its not working out.. showing error!!!
by MohanRaj5 on Nov 21, 2013 at 2:52 PM
I think this is a good jump start for everyone starting with SQL. But as a advanced SQL-user I think some things are just not correct about the diagram. For example, normalizing the productcategory and productsubcategory tables as one productcategory table would be better.
by Tarabass on Oct 26, 2013 at 8:12 PM
Downloaded and installed with no issues.
by smothmoove on Sep 22, 2013 at 4:50 AM
I had no problems whatsoever...

"AdventureWorks2012-Full Database might have been moved or deleted" Very, very poor!
by Chiburi on Apr 30, 2013 at 3:39 PM
Would be great if the 'AdventureWorks Multidimensional Models SQL Server 2012' project also contains some sample roles..
by nhaslam on Apr 30, 2013 at 10:59 AM

by toffeena on Apr 17, 2013 at 8:30 PM

by bhayes on Apr 5, 2013 at 3:27 PM
super like..need to remove the .ldf file before attaching the mdf to the datadase. It will automatically create the ldf
by debz on Mar 26, 2013 at 7:59 PM
it's good. but why not give a .ldf file to make it complete?
by RedHeart on Mar 18, 2013 at 8:40 AM
Please repair the link for downloading "AdventureWorks2012 Data File", now it doesn't work.
by MRNiyazmatov on Mar 12, 2013 at 12:12 PM
The download links do not work. If you click the link, the answer is an HTML page with "downloading... Click here if your browser does not start the download automatically. " if you click in "here" you get the message: "Gateway Timeout The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server. Reference #1.d8050f17.1363013066.24597bfe " Please, someone can fix this?
by xems on Mar 11, 2013 at 4:15 PM
AdventureWorksDW2012 Data File link does not work. the file is too small to be a .mdf can you please re-upload? Here is an alternative url Thanks
by Yasirbam on Dec 28, 2012 at 9:16 PM
The download link for AdventureWorksDW2012 doesn't work, if you click the link you download an HTML file containing the following text "There was an error downloading the file. It may have been deleted from the server." Could you please fix the link?
by postme on Dec 25, 2012 at 7:11 PM
super! thank you!
by egamesu on Oct 24, 2012 at 12:51 AM
It used to be a chore to get the sample databases installed on a dev server..... Looks like better sense has prevailed and you folks have made it simpler to download and get going quickly on the stuff users are interested in rather than learning the "high-brow" install regime imposed on us in the past. Thanks for waking up. and thanks for your hard work too ...
by SQLCHANTER on Jul 22, 2012 at 11:54 PM
Any update on the AMO Tabular release date? A tentative date?
by dlazaro on Jun 12, 2012 at 7:40 PM
Please provide more sample databases and models. Thank you guys, this is AWESOME!
by sap9955 on May 13, 2012 at 8:44 AM
**NOTE! This is an .mdf file (not .msi, as the docs suggest). So you cannot "install" it, but rather must "attach" it to your database. (From SSMS: r-click on Databases, choose "Attach..." and the "Add".) ALSO: using this method to attach, SSMS will *by default* search also for the .ldf file (which isnt included), causing attach-process to FAIL. You must manually REMOVE the .ldf before clicking OK
by kmote on Apr 18, 2012 at 5:14 PM
Great but where have the AMO2 Tabular samples moved to?
by caffienated on Apr 10, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Both ADW & ADW DW 2012 showing I/O Error while loading or vieing the data........Please update ASAP.
by RamkiNM on Mar 20, 2012 at 7:02 AM
Great but also the LT version pls
by hennie7863 on Mar 15, 2012 at 9:03 AM
And another 5*, thanks! Hope you will also add a new LT version soon, since they are much easier to use for training purposes.
by FlorianReischl on Mar 12, 2012 at 9:29 PM
Thanks for the good work (it was a good idea to skip the FILESTREAM dependency)! Everything works smoothly and as expected - if you read the instructions and meet the requirements described above - .mdf is a fine format for databases :-)
by ErikBo on Feb 17, 2012 at 3:36 AM
I hope there is a MSI file to easily put on. bak file even is better than the MDF. It doesnot work in my 11.01440 version. No idea why. Possibly because my version is CTP3
by derekdai on Feb 1, 2012 at 8:46 PM
There was not a separate download button on this page previously, so there's no change from the previous behavior. Please try clicking on the link for the specific download, and see if you have any issues with downloading.
by susanjo on Jan 10, 2012 at 10:25 PM
Please add the download button....
by vshuaib_2k3 on Jan 4, 2012 at 12:31 AM
Why not simply change the file name to indicate Denali or 2012RC0. As with the first reviewer ... I can't see the dowload button ??? What's the problem??
by UlyssesBrown on Dec 31, 2011 at 3:52 PM

Garbage! This is not for people starting out learning SQL 2012, The downloads do not have all the files needed to get the database to load. You end up on an Easter egg hunt trying to figure out what's missing. Don't waste your time on this site. JUNK!
