To ECJB1969: I teach at University of Phoenix, and T-SQL is not hard to learn. If you expect to have a professional career programming SQL then you should be able to learn flavors of SQL (I have). Ben Forta's book is a good place to start, and you can then graduate to Itzik Ben-Gan's books on this topic.

Works for me. Unlike many others, the installer ran without a hitch. The DB samples should be very useful to me since I am taking SQL for Business currently at the University of Phoenix. Thanks a million - thumbs up.
One caveat - did you have to use T-SQL instead of ISO standard SQL? I really want to learn ISO standard SQL instead of the Microsoft version.

I can not install it on Sql Server 2008 Express edition, full text search is started, I don't know why, and there have no log to let me know what's wrong. too bad

I'm sorry but if MS can't create databases for their own product then that says a lot about the product. I have an idea, stop adding cool new features to SQL v.Next and try getting the SQL Server (and samples) installations right. This installation does not work on a full up SQL 2008 machine with all the prereqs. It's broken.

For those who have problem with the msi file, you may try download the zip file and follow SQLCMD approach on this page http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Database%20Installer%20Help. At least that works for me

This process is not an improvement. Honestly, when did a SQL Server SAMPLE DB turn into an Oracle install?

Kinda disappointed. The installers do not work on either MSSQL Express 2008 on XP or MSSQL 2008 Standard on Server 2003 (64bit). The installers end abruptly without explaining what went wrong. The raw zip files are just as useless. Why can't we download these sample databases either as standard backup files or as DB Publishing Wizard style SQL dump files?

Like many others, I could not install this with SQL Server Express. Finally, I uninstalled Express and downloaded the 180 day eval version, enabled FileStream and Full Text, and the install went fine. I'm not sure what the problem was with Express.

I spent more than an hour searching how to install this database.
I am doing SQL Server for more than 10 years and I never thought that one day installing a database would be that difficult
I cannot understand why it is so difficult to install this database
What's the need for an MSI package when a simple MDF to attach or BAK to restore?
Please, where i can download a backup file for AW2008?

The Database Installer Help was very usefull and I was able to get evrything installed using the .msi file but there should be a more accurate Status Bar indicator...on my machine it filled up completely right away and looked like it hung but luckily I was watching the database install directory and could see the databases still being added. More feedback in UI is needed

I have 2008 SQLExpress, w/no full search text. I set the FILESTREAM properties, then used http://www.ssas-info.com/analysis-services-faq/29-mgmt/242-how-install-adventure-works-dw-database-analysis-services-2005-sample-database
Specifically "A3: For Analysis Services 2008 (Sample Refresh 1). Steps if on the server you DO NOT have full text search enabled:" Installed DW OK. Similar steps for OLTP.

Worked great. Made sure FullText Search was enabled and Filestream was running before the install.

For all that couldn't install the sample databases because of not being able to start the full-text search service: Guys, no need to make bitter comments, just read thoroughly! It is expalined quite well what to do in order to start it. I did it and then managed to install the databases.

Note: I have installed it with SQL 2008 Enterprise Edition.

Hey this is great stuff but you need to have sql 2008 std and above. express wont cut it for full text search and the new data types like geography, name, hierarchy, date->datetime.
I had to switch the datatypes to existing ones in express to get the databases scripts to work. Plus FilesStream wont work in express. Wanted DB w/o need of 180 day sql 2008.
Thanks works, if you have patience.

This installed better than any others I have tried!!! Up and running in just a minute after downloading. No problems at all if you follow the pre-reqs

A 61 meg installer download for the sample databases is crazy. Why not just make the setup scripts available?

Was completely unable to use .msi install due to Full-Text Search issues. Full-Text Search is installed but cannot be started. Similar problems using .zip files, but I was able to skip the indexes that use full-text search and continue with the rest of the install. You REALLY should create a version of these AdventureWorks databases for SQL 2008 that is not dependant on full-text search.

Installed fine second time AFTER making sure that Full-text was running on SQL instance via that configuration tool. SQL installs Full-text in a disabled mode so check the properties, set to auto or manual start and start the service.

I've installed 5 times, 5 times, just no luck... when it says finished, I still can not find any databases except system databases and database snapshots under Databases folder...
Do you guys test it before uploaded to codeplex???
Such a waste of time... I'd like to rate it to no star but can't do that... so one star... VERY POOR

I don't have a default instance so it won't install. There isn't even a database backup. What the hell am I supposed to do with a bunch of CSV's? Import them manually one after the other?

What a mess - very long and confusing install, even required a reboot. For a database! Install stopped with msg: "Your installation attempt ended prematurely.” Yup, that was it. Even though I have met the requirements I have no idea what is wrong. Shameful to take the simple 2005 AW process and turn it into this monster. I downloaded the 2005 version and let SQL Server migrate it instead.

install doesn't work and there is no troubleshooting available. Install says it finishes succesfully, but doesn't add itself to databases in SQL Server. Install of actual databse has no .mdb file included either.
