Sample Databases for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Refresh 1

This release is dedicated to the sample databases that ship for Microsoft SQL Server 2008. See Database Prerequisites for steps to take before installing the databases. See Installing Databases for step by step installation instructions.

Note: Looking for SQL Server 2005 sample databases? Click on SQL Server 2005 in the Releases area on the upper right hand part of this page. Databases installers which begin with SQL2008 will only work on SQL Server 2008 instances and will not work correctly for SQL Server 2005 instances.

All of the AdventureWorks databases for SQL Server 2008 are included in each installer and ZIP file.

Please give us your feedback in the samples forum! (Yes, even the complaints. We do try to respond to them.)

It all worked out of the box for me. New install of SQL 2008 Developer Edition, 64bit on W2008 server. I already had full text search running and my instance was set up for Filestream. Lucked out.

Downloaded the SQL2008 x86 and it worked after installing the Full Text Search in MS SQL 2008 Dev Ed x86 (running under Vista Ultimate). My SQL Server instance's FILESTREAM is already enabled. I should say, I am almost discouraged to install the database after reading the bad reviews -- glad I did it anyway. :) Thanks to JeremyDean for the helpful tip.

Didnt install, will go and look up error message. I just cannot understand how anyone can make a basic save and restore operation so complex, why ? Enabled FILESTREAM and installed ok.

No problems here at all. I am creating a virtual hard drive for use in course and wanted AdventureWorks available for students (the textbook includes exercises against it). I was braced for an afternoon of frustration based upon some recent reviews and was surprised at a quick and clean install. Perhaps the pristine nature of my install (virgin PC with all updates and no cruft) greased the skids.

FullText Search and FileStream must be enabled and the 'Important Note' during the install tells you this. I found if they are not enabled it screwed my instance of SQL Server2008. Simply go to Start/All Programs/MS SQL Server2008/Config Tools/Config Mgr then SQL Server Services. Enable and start SQL Full-Text Filter Daemon and click Properties of your SQL Server instance to enable Filestream.

Just as others have advised the installation package simply doesn't work (at least for 2008 Ent ed on XP SP3). Like many others, I get an error message stating that full text search is not installed even though it is installed. My reason for wanting to download this installer is that the copy of the mdf/ldf files I have won't attach. That error says I don't have filstream enabled even tho it is!

This install is no good. When trying to install onto a Win XP SQL 08 box I get either SQL Server error 5120 or Full text Search is not installed (which it is). And in typical MS style they don't support their professional products with out paying 250.00. I've worked on this for a couple of days, can not attach adventure works 08 database with out errors.

1. To rate the release, I had to register. Best avoided to attract a larger userbase. 2. this is the fourth attempt that I've been trying to download and install the sample databases, without success. a cryptic error code 2738 shows up eveytime. 3. No simplicity for us mortals.

I want to obtain the BIDS project for Lesson 4 of the Analysis Services tutorial. It does not get intalled and is not in the zip file. The codeplex web page says the documentation installed in Tools\Samples. The only document there refers you back to the codeplex Web page! Incidentally, the project gets loaded with no problem in the SQL Server 2005 samples.

I had also the 2 Full Text Search Issues during 2 different installations. One because feature was not installed, second because of the service. I have posted a complete overview of these samples installation with Full Text Search issues solving and preventing including for Express edition: http://mosshowto.blogspot.com/2009/01/adventure-works-2008-installation-sql.html

Have to say that I had a good experience with the downloads. I'm a complete beginner in this area, working on an XP system and everything seems to have downloaded perfectly. Now I just have to learn how to use it all!

Ok...the error messge says that the installer is not right. The real problem is one of the services being enabled...I enabled them all being supersticious. Wow, what does it all mean? Why am I in this bad place around all these bad people? I feel so much better that I read all these complaints. Now I can go play on the freeway!

The install worked like a champ! I'm running SQL Express 2008 on XP (yes i know) and it was flawless. Everything installed as expected. I also had SQL Studio running during the install, no complaints, refresh the DB view and we're rockin!

I can not get the sample database to load. Bummer! Searches on "FILESTREAM" which is the error message don't return useful information. The engineers at MS can build a product like SQL2008 but they cannot get the sample databases to load. Sad Sad Sad. I continue to work on this have tried numerous things none make any difference. I have SQL Server Enterprise running on Win XP with all patches

The security in Windows Server 2008 security disables this hyperlink, so I opened Windows XP Professional in Virtual PC. The link was active and the download went off without a hitch. My initial attempt at installation failed, so I tried it again. On the second go-round, I noticed the dialog that states which features of SQL Server must be active BEFORE the install.

I'm not sure if it is just hard to find, or if there is no good documentation. My installation of SQL Server 2008 is a named instance so the installer will not work. But the error given does not say why, it just quits. So I used the zip file. There is a lot of fancy footwork that you need to do to get the query to run. A page on installing from the zip would be nice.

Would have given 0 stars if this hadn't of worked. For x86 db, make sure "Full Text Search Feature" is turned on AND enable "SQL Full-text Daemon Launcher (MSSQLSERVER)" service. Needed this for SQL Server 2008 180 day trial... found this info elsewhere on internet. Would be helpful to have all instructions in one place, dontcha think?

To have a great product like SQL Server 2008 be stymied by incompetent engineers who can't fix the download of the sample databases is unforgivable.

Installed Successfully. Used the SQL2008.AdventureWorks_All_Databases.x86.msi. SQL Server 2008 Enterprise edition on Windows Vista. Saved the installer on my hard disk then ran the install. Completed within 5-10 mins. Running it directly was slow in download for me.

The .bak files are not in the file system and I don't get an option to restore the databases either. Did anyone have the same issue and find a resolution for it? The zip file does not contain the .bak files of the databases either.

This installed on Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 64-bit, with no problems. The tables have gone in okay.

I downloaded the x86 file but when I went to install got a message saying "Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package". Frustrating to say the least!

We should have Santa handle this. I think it's the only option left. :-) Works like magic for me, only if this can be called magic. :-)

It seems a shame to rate all the work that went into this based on the installer, but without being able to optionally select databases on installation, installation fails if you didn't add full-text search to your instance.

The download doesn't work, like the other folks said. I clicked on the license agreement, then nothing, and IE won't respond. Unacceptable!

I agree with others about "nothing" happening when clicking the links. No matter how long I waited (IE7 Windows 2008 Server) it never did anything. Jumped over to Windows XP SP3 IE7 and it worked without issue. Forget the bottleneck theory, there is problem here and someone REALLY needs to wakeup and look into this issue...

Have patience! I tried IE7x64 and IE7x86 without and with registering and signing in first via the portal link and directly. It occurs to me that the server(s) may be very busy :-)

@Ganastas: My friend, it all work, that depends on how you download either your line is too slow or somethin that make your line a real bottleneck

It's a good idea to put all AdventureWorks databases in a single installation package (for each architecture), but the installer should offer options to install only some databases, if desired. About the download experience... it works, but you should wait a long time (e.g. 2 minutes) before the download starts, which is weird.
by rsocol on Nov 16 2008 at 6:40 AM

It just does not work..... :-( ... none of the links do anything, no matter how long you wait!
